Warehouse to Wheels
A practical programme from Northwards that shows young people how to build a career in transport
Learning How the Industry Works
Northwards’ Warehouse to Wheels programme is designed to show that you don’t jump straight into a lorry on day one. Instead, you learn how the industry works first and progress at a safe, supported pace.
Starting in the Warehouse
Most participants begin in a warehouse or entry‑level role, so you learn how logistics work behind the scenes. This includes:
- how goods are received, stored, and prepared for delivery
- understanding routes, schedules, and customer requirements
- learning about safety, teamwork, and responsibility
- seeing how drivers, planners, and warehouse teams work together
This stage helps you to understand the full journey of goods before moving into driving.

Progressing into Driving
As you gain experience and confidence, you begin training towards your HGV licence, supported by Northwards and an approved training provider.
HGV Theory Test
The theory test checks your knowledge of road rules and safe driving, with a focus on large vehicles. You’ll learn about:
- road signs and speed limits
- vehicle size, weight, and load safety
- driver responsibilities
- how weather, fatigue, and road conditions affect driving
You’ll get guidance and support, so you understand what’s involved and how to pass.
Hazard Perception Test
This test is about spotting danger early. You’ll watch video clips from a driver’s point of view and identify hazards such as:
- pedestrians stepping into the road
- cyclists or motorbikes appearing suddenly
- vehicles braking or pulling out
- changing road or weather conditions
This stage is designed to build awareness and good decision‑making skills.

Driver CPC Qualification
You require the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) to drive HGVs professionally. This focuses on being a safe and responsible working driver, covering:
- daily vehicle safety checks
- safe loading and securing goods
- fuel‑efficient and environmentally friendly driving
- dealing with emergencies and breakdowns
- professional behaviour and customer service
This helps to prepare you for real working life, not just passing the test.
Practical Driving and Vehicle Progression
With an approved training provider, you can complete an intensive 3–4 day training course to obtain your HGV licence. After qualifying, Northwards supports you with real‑life driving experience, not just test routes.
Drivers typically progress through:
- smaller vehicles and vans
- smaller HGVs
- larger HGVs and more complex operations
You’ll gain experience across different routes, vehicles and types of work, with experienced drivers and supervisors supporting you as you develop confidence and skills.

A Clear Career Path
Warehouse to Wheels gives young people a clear route from school into a long‑term career. You earn, learn, and build experience while gaining skills, qualifications, and confidence in a growing industry.
